Will I have any dietary restrictions?
As with a normal bowel, diet following ostomy surgery will have an effect on the frequency and consistancy of stool. Although there is no single "ostomy diet" there are considerations to keep in mind.
- Add new foods to your diet one at a time and in smaller portions until you know how they will effect you.
- Extra fluids in your diet will help to keep stools soft.
- Slow down! Chew food slowly and thoroughly to aid digestion.
- Seeds and kernals in foods can contribute a blockages or constipation. Those with an ileostomy may especially need to avoid such foods.
How will this affect my work and social life?
Unless you work at a job which requires heavy lifting, bending, or other similar activity, your ostomy should have minimal impact on your ability to continue working. Sports and other activities should also not be affected. A properly fitted pouch will allow you to participate in most sports, including swimming. Generally speaking, your ostomy should not interfere with dating and marriage. And depending on the underlying reason for your ostomy, sexual activity, pregnancy, and having children should all be possible.
