Ostomy Pouching Systems

Ostomy Pouching System

Types of Pouching Systems

Ostomy appliances fall into 2 general categories; One-piece and two-piece pouching systems. Each type can be a closed pouch, or a drainable pouch system. Whether one or two piece, the adhesive part that attaches to the skin is referred to as a skin barrier or "wafer." This barrer is designed to hold the appliance in place, and to also protect the skin from contact with output from the stoma. The other part of the system is the collection pouch.

Two-Piece Systems

The wafer/skin barrier and the collection pouch are separated. The wafer can then stay attached to the abdomen while a new collection pouch is added. This can mean less irritation to the skin. The pouch and wafer are connected and held together with a plastic, snap on pressure ring, similar to the snap on lid of a kitchen storage container.

One-Piece Systems

The adhesive skin barrier and the collection pouch are integrated as a single, one-piece appliance. The advantage is ease of use. But the adhesive barrier and entire appliance must be removed and replaced.

Whether one or two-piece, ostomy pouching systems are available as closed or drainable appliances. A closed pouch is a single use collection pouch which is removed and disposed of when full. Conversely, a drainable pouch can be emptied when full, allowing longer use of each appliance.

The choice of a particular type and style of pouching system is a personal decision which involves consideration of lifestyle, physical dexterity, ostomy type, and simple individual preference. Do not hesitate to experiment with a number of different options until you find a pouching system which meets your needs.
