The Kidneys and Bladder

Urine is produced in the kidneys. From here it passes through the ureters into the urinary bladder. From the bladder urine is discharged through the urethra. The kidneys are located in the upper part of the lumbar region, one on either side of the spine. The upper part of the ureters is close to the middle, the lower part slopes forward down to the bladder. Urine is produced all the time, but it is stored in the bladder, which is emptied when urine is pressed through the urethra on discharge. Urostomy surgery diverts urine through an opening on the stomach.
